The officers and members of the Pleasant Hall Volunteer Fire Company would like to offer their condolences to the members of West End Fire & Rescue, Fannett Metal Fire Company & the Family members of Lieutenant Keith Hess who was tragically taken from us in the Line Of Duty on January 20th, 2003 doing what he loved most.  Keith, you will be sorely missed by all not only as a fellow firefighter but as a very good friend.

AUTO vs UTILITY POLE
JAN.27 - 0026 hrs. Engine 11-1, Ambulance 11-8 & Squad 15 were alerted to a single vehicle crash on Cumberland Hwy in the area of Short Rd. Assistant Chief 11 (Sikes) arrived on scene to find 1 auto off the roadway, a utility pole sheared off and the operator out of the vehicle. Squad 15 was placed available, EMS attended to the patient while the engine crew tool care of small antifreeze leak and debris removal. Patient transported to Chambersburg Hosp. priority 3, Engine 11-1 cleared at 0100 hrs.
 
3 INJURED HEAD-ON CRASH
JAN.25 - Engine 11-1 & Ambulance 11-8 along w/ Engine 13-1, Squad 41 & Ambulance 1-9 responded to an auto accident at Cumberland Highway & Sunset Pike Box 11-05 shortly after 6pm.  Units arrived to find 1-priority 2 patient & 2- priority 3 patients, Ambulance 153 & Medic 101 were dispatched.  Engine crews assisted EMS w/ patient care after controlling hazards. All 3 patients transported to Chambersburg Hospital, Engines cleared within 30 minutes.
 
FATAL APARTMENT BUILDING FIRE
JAN.20At 1501 hrs Engine 11-1 & units from Co's 12, 21 & 15 along with other units from Huntington, Juniata, Fulton & Cumberland Counties responded to a reported apratment building fire on Hotel Rd in Tell Twp Box 12-14, first arriving units found a fully involved structure with exposures. All departments worked together to bring the fire under control within approximately 1 hour. Then shortly after 1700 hrs during salvage & overhaul operations crews on scene heard the 2 words they fear the most "Firefighters Trapped", while performing overhaul operations on the 1st floor 3 firefighters became trapped when the second floor came crashing down. Crews worked frantically to free them,  one firefighter was able to escape refusing care on scene, the second firefighter was pulled out and transported by ground to Chambersburg Hospital, the third firefighter was pulled out and transported by Life Lion to Chambersburg Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
 
SMOKE IN A BUILDING
JAN.14 - At 1525 hrs Engine 11-1 & Ambulance 11-9 responded 1st due along w/ Co.15, 13, 52, Trk-53 & 42, Tankers 51 & 49 to a report of smoke in the building at 9724 Cumberland Hwy Franklin County District Magistrate Weymens Office. Apon arrival of Engine 11-1 a light smoke condition was found in the courtroom area, crews checked the duct work above the ceiling and the heating units on the roof, the box was held to Engine 11-1, Engine 15-1 (WEFR) & Trk-53 (CV Hose) others available, Further investigation determined a malfunctioning heating unit on the roof, remaining units cleared at 1555 hrs. Capt.11 (Denham) was the Incident Commander.
 
3 TEENS INJURED IN AUTO ACCIDENT
JAN.13 - At 1925 hrs Engine 11-1, Ambulance 11-8 & 11-9 along w/ Squad 15 (WEFR) & Medic 84 responded to an auto accident reported with entrapment at the 5300 blk of Orrstown Rd. Apon arrival Capt.11 (Denham) found a single vehicle into a utility pole with all occupants clear of the vehicle, Squad 15 was placed available.  The engine crew arrived and checked the vehicle for hazards and assisted EMS crews with patient care, Ambulance 253 who was transfering to Co.11 was called to the scene to transport the 3rd patient. All 3 were transported to Chambersburg Hospital, Engine 11-1 cleared at 2015 hrs.
